Fabio siger: “Our approach to viticulture is organic but we are not certified. we never use herbicides.”

The 2009 Gabbro (Cabernet Sauvignon) is impeccable and refined from start to finish. This isn’t a vintage built on structure, as has been the case in the recent past, but rather a wine that impresses for its silky tannins, expressive aromatics, and overall finesse. The 2009 is quite feminine and gracious in style, but there is plenty of underlying tannin and fruit. In exchange, the 2009 should drink well earlier than some of the other, more important vintages that precede it. Anticipated maturity: 2014-2024.

Suvereto is one of the warmer microclimates in the Tuscan Maremma. Proprietor Fabio Chiarelotto succeeded in capturing the best elements of these sites while also shaping his wines with a level of finesse that is remarkable. The 2009s are fabulous, especially within the context of the year. Chiarelotto decided against bottling the Nardo, because many of the Sangiovese and Montepulciano vineyards struggled with the intense heat. The fruit he was able to salvage went into the Eneo, which helps explain why that wine is such a standout. The 2010s were stunning when I tasted them from barrel last summer. Readers can get an early peek at the vintage with the 2010 A Quo, a wine that delivers absurdly high quality for the money.

94 Point Parker

The 2018 Gabbro (100% Cabernet Sauvignon) is quite possibly the most elegant wine I have ever tasted at Montepeloso. Inky black cherry, chocolate, grilled herb, licorice and menthol infuse the 2018 with fabulous depth. Even with all of its opulence, the 2018 remains so poised and light on its feet. The new oak needs just a bit of time to settle. There is little doubt the 2018 is an absolutely gorgeous wine in the making. It’s a reference point expression of Cabernet Sauvignon on the Tuscan coast.

95+ The 2018 Gabbro is a pure expression of Cabernet Sauvignon, with only 1,400 bottles made. There is a lot of coastal Tuscan sunshine here that smooths over the fruit, adding richness, integration, ripeness and ultimately a terrific sense of balance. Summery black tones of plum, prune, blackberry and dried cherry emerge from the bouquet, pulling forth background tones of spice, tobacco and campfire ash. The wine is full and rich throughout, showing generous layers on the mid-palate and on the very long and pleasurable finish. The tannins are soft and balanced (from both the fruit and the oak), but I’d still recommend a few more years of bottle age before you pop the cork.
